Immediately these words went through my mind, “Jesus went before you”. An awe fell over me. Where did Jesus go? To the cross! He had one goal. He told the disciples of this one thing many times, but they didn’t understand; it was as if they were deaf.
Sermons are full of examples of following Jesus: to love to God, to love one another, how to pray, how to heal, how to live. But how many sermons have you heard that focused on going to the cross? Obviously, at Easter that’s the sermon that’s heard around the world. But I’m talking about a spiritual cross.
The cross of self-denial, surrender. The cross of saying yes to God’s plan and no to the world’s plan. You can fill in the blanks for your own life. I believe that the greatest heartache God must have when it comes to His children is to look at those who got so comfortable in “salvation” and never asked Him to become Lord of their lives. (Romans 14:9) That’s the cross that Jesus carried each and every moment of His life on this earth. He repeated often that He didn’t do anything apart from God, He only went where God directed Him, He only did what God instructed Him to do. He was totally sold out to His Father. Why aren’t we?
I’m not saying we all need to quit work and sit and wait to see where God sends us; that is totally unbiblical. Jesus spent time with His Father in prayer, early morning and often late into the night. He often went away from the crowds to be alone with Him. I believe He did more listening than talking!
What is your goal? Is it a new house, a promotion, a new motor home, a new boat, an expensive car? There is nothing wrong with any of those things if God has ordained them in your life and they are used for His glory. Our Father loves to bless us, but do we ever consider if our lives are a blessing to Him? Have you ever asked Him how you can be a blessing?
Do you sometimes feel as if something is missing in your life? If your answer was yes, it’s God calling you to come apart and sit with Him awhile. He wants to share His heart with you and to open your heart to His desire for your life.
The way of the cross is the way of victory! It is a life like nothing you will ever experience here on earth. It is preparation for your place in the eternal kingdom. Won’t you join in the journey today? Many of you may be saying you are already on that journey, praise the Lord! When was the last time you asked the Lord if this is still where He would have you? Often we become so accustomed to the place we are, we can miss His shifting us in another direction. An important aspect of the way of the cross is to always be listening, always be willing to move in another direction or to even rest when He wants to pull you aside for awhile.
I close with this question, when is that last time you sat quiet with the Lord to hear Him speak these words to you? “How beautiful and how delightful you are, my love, with all your charms!” (Song of Solomon 7:6)
Dear Lord, how precious are Your thoughts to me! I am overwhelmed by Your love towards me. The desire of my heart is to be more like You. Forgive me for allowing the distractions of this world to pull me away from Your desire for me. Your Son, Jesus, loved people and loved being with them. He loved to celebrate their marriages and their children! Those times were not “apart” from You but a part of You. Jesus’ life on this earth shows us that our lives are not to be lived in compartments, separate from each other, but everything works together in one accord...for Your glory alone! Thank You that You have already walked this path and will lead me in the direction of the cross, all I need to do is ask. You are my strength, my shield and the lifter of my head. Show me how to lay my life at the foot of the cross, to trust You with all that is already Yours. I love You! Amen.
