However, God knew that Satan would be able to convince many with his lies, so the Lord addressed this issue and it is a final declaration of the meaning of life. Read the opening verse above again. Now focus on the last part, “Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother's wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother. But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also.” Why was God displeased with Onan wasting his seed on the ground? Because the seed was life! Notice he didn’t want his brother to have the honor of an offspring, he knew that his seed would produce a child that would be his brother’s heir. He aborted any chance that the seed would grow. As we continue in our study you will see clearly why this was sin and lead to his death.
Life is precious to the Lord. He breathed life into the nostrils of a shape of a man made of dirt and created life! “Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7) God had already created all of the universe and the things on earth, but none were living and able to have a relationship with the Lord. Not only did God create a man to have a relationship with, He also gave that created being a wonderful gift. What was that gift? “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’" (Genesis 1:26 emphasis mine) God valued life! He didn’t create mankind for failure! He created mankind with intelligence and abilities to succeed! God is sovereign and He has authority over EVERYTHING that He created. All creation responds to His command. He did not give mankind or any other thing of creation His sovereignty and power but He did create mankind to rule (oversee, have dominion) over the things of this earth. Do not confuse rule or dominion with control. We cannot control anything but that, again, is what Satan has convinced people of, that they have control of other’s behaviors.
Notice also that God said, “Let Us make man in Our image” (emphasis mine). The Father, Son and Holy Spirit created man. The man that God created could not make another human being by himself, he needed a companion. Just as it took the triune God to create mankind, the same pattern was used for man to procreate, it had to be a man and a woman together. The union between a man and a woman was to be sacred. Just as the love of God created mankind, the love of a man and woman created another living being, holy in the sight of God! That life was intended to reflect the glory of God! But sin entered into the Garden of Eden and separated mankind from God. That one simple act of disobedience, pride to be like God, and mankind was making decisions through a carnal mind, apart from God’s desire. “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--” (Romans 5:12)
God also gave mankind a mind in which to make decisions, He gave him a freewill. God does not and will not control us like puppets. He will not make us obey Him or follow Him. He gave us a mind to make choices. But just because we have the ability to make choices, does not mean that any choice we make that is in direct opposition to the laws of God will not have consequences. We can choose what is right in the eyes of God or choose what is not right in His eyes, and that is sin. What people do not understand is that even when we choose wrongly, God still loves us and desires that we repent, turn away from our sin and turn to Him. "..Thus says the Lord GOD, ‘Repent and turn away from your idols and turn your faces away from all your abominations.’” (Ezekiel 14:6) Which is exactly why Jesus Christ came to this earth! “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,” (Ephesians 2:1 emphasis mine)
There is another example in Scripture that relates to the killing of a child that we need to consider. “But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and even made his son pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had driven out from before the sons of Israel.” (2 Kings 16:3 emphasis mine) “Then they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and practiced divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him.” (2 Kings 17:17 emphasis mine) "They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, and it did not come into My mind.” (Jeremiah 7:31 emphasis mine) Molech was an idol (god) of the Ammonites. People would sacrifice their children to him, that is what the term “pass through the fire” was referring to. One of the rites of Molech worship was to sacrifice children. Sound familiar? Even though these children had been given life, that life was “aborted” as a sacrifice to a heathen god! Let us look at some Scriptures so that we understand the Lord’s view on this practice. ”You shall not give any of your offspring to offer them to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 18:21) "You shall also say to the sons of Israel: `Any man from the sons of Israel or from the aliens sojourning in Israel who gives any of his offspring to Molech, shall surely be put to death; the people of the land shall stone him with stones. I will also set My face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given some of his offspring to Molech, so as to defile My sanctuary and to profane My holy name. If the people of the land, however, should ever disregard that man when he gives any of his offspring to Molech, so as not to put him to death, then I Myself will set My face against that man and against his family, and I will cut off from among their people both him and all those who play the harlot after him, by playing the harlot after Molech.’” (Leviticus 20:2-5) "They built the high places of Baal that are in the valley of Ben-hinnom to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I had not commanded them nor had it entered My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.” (Jeremiah 32:35) God does not take lightly the taking of a life, whether that life is an unborn child, a birthed child, or an adult…”thou shalt not kill”. No justification can make it a right decision!
Remember that only true followers of Jesus Christ live by the WHOLE Word of God! However, there are some who do not believe in Jesus Christ and still morally stand against taking a life. Generally the majority of non-believers do not see or understand why we stand for life. Even some who profess to be followers of Jesus Christ cannot separate themselves from the world so as to understand that this is a firm foundation. “and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” (Romans 1:32) “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 8:6-8) “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.” (1 John 2:15-17) Agreeing with evil, condoning evil or living in the same manner of the world will not lead the lost to Jesus Christ! “Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, `I am the LORD your God. You shall not do what is done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. You are to perform My judgments and keep My statutes, to live in accord with them; I am the LORD your God. So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man may live if he does them; I am the LORD.’’” (Leviticus 18:1-5 emphasis mine) Before you try and rationalize that this no longer applies because it was written in the Old Testament, here is the truth which refutes that lie. "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17) "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” (Matthew 5:18)
The seed of man is not the only seed that has significance in the Word of God. The parable of the sower portrays a true disciple and a lost person. In Scripture a seed also refers to one’s descendants. Think about creation, flowers grow from seeds, fruit trees grow from seeds, vegetables grow from seeds, wheat and barley grow from seed, a vineyard begins with a seed, even grass grows from seed! “Then God said, ‘Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them’; and it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:11-12) “Then God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;’” (Genesis 1:29)
Hopefully you are beginning to see the significance. And one of the most remarkable facts about seeds that we need to understand is that a seed cannot produce anything without dying! Ever hear the term “dying to self”? Unless we die to self we cannot grow in the Lord. What is dying to self? Realizing and repenting of being prideful and controlling, demanding that everything must be our way, unwilling to forgive, believing oneself is more important than other people, having an entitlement attitude. The Apostle Paul uses himself to demonstrate to us what a life of a true follower of Jesus Christ looks like, “I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.” (1 Corinthians 15:31) “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 emphasis mine) Going back to our passage on the Lord killing Onan for wasting his seed, we can now understand that this is a physical picture referring to one who is not spiritually reborn! By this one act alone, we can see that Onan was not willing to die to self so that a new life could be born. His only thought was for himself. A prideful man cannot stand before a loving God. “So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:12-14) Proverbs is full of examples of the fall of man due to sin, these are just a small sample. "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth, I hate.” (Proverbs 8:13) “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.” (Proverbs 16:18) “A man's pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor.” (Proverbs 29:23)
If you have had an abortion my heart breaks for you because I can only imagine the pain your soul must experience. But there is good news! You no longer need to be held in bondage, but to be set free through the free gift of salvation! Jesus is the Bondage Breaker! The Holy Spirit is your Comforter. The good news is that God also provided a way from the life that produced death to an eternal life through the Lord Jesus Christ! “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) God doesn’t hate you or me when we sin, He hates the sin. The sin separates us from Him and when we are separated from HIm we are in a dangerous place. We are vulnerable to attacks of the enemy and very likely to fall even further because we are living apart from the Lord. “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, I have come to know Him, and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps His word in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him; the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.” (1 John 2:1-6)
How did our Lord and Savior walk? Obviously He was led by the Holy Spirit. He spent much time in prayer and only did what His Father told Him. But what about you and me? Of course, the answer is the same, but we are also very blessed to have had the Apostle Paul give us a detailed plan of how to live and walk as the Lord walked. Let’s read it together, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of the wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, AND HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, …” (Ephesians 6:10-18) The sections in capital letters are the words of the Lord spoken through the Prophet Isaiah regarding the coming Messiah. (See Isaiah 11:5; 52:7; 59:17) They tell us how Jesus would walk and therefore, as imitators of Him, we too should walk. “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.” (Ephesians 5:1)
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, this is not our home! As we close this devotion I am blessed and uplifted by the words of the Apostle Peter, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you will have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter 1:3-9 emphasis mine) “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” (John 15:10)
“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior, because it is written, ‘YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.’ If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through Him are believers in God, who raised HIm from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Peter 1:13-21)
“Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who esteem His name. ‘They will be Mine’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘on the day that I prepare My own possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.’” (Malachi 3:16-17)
What are you doing with the seeds that God gave you to sow?
Abba Father, I love You and thank You for Your precious words given to us to live by, to have life, not just here on this earth but for eternity with You! Thank You, Lord Jesus for Your shed blood that covers all of our sins when we believe and come to You to die of our fleshly desires and to be reborn into a new creation which loves, adores and obeys You! Lord, we need healing, we have transgressed so far from Your plan for our lives. I pray that Your words will spread freely to those who read this devotion and be used to share with others to bring healing and redemption to the lost! May Your will be done here on earth as it is in heaven. I bow my knee and worship You in spirit and truth. This I pray through Your Son, Jesus Christ, amen!
