“...for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God.”
If you go back to Genesis to chapters 4 and 5 you will get a sense of the state of the minds of the people, which will remind you of today. The sin that began in the Garden of Eden has not changed. From disobedience to wanting to be like God, to murder. Sin expounds rapidly!
But what so touches my heart and challenges me is that it does not matter what is going on in the world around you, you have choices. Choices which you will be held accountable for. If you really examine our choices, there are only two; obedience to God or disobedience to God. There is no sin less than another, they are the same in God’s eyes.
“for he obtained the witness…”
Enoch lived 365 years! Compare that to short period of time we are on earth. Scripture does not go into detail about miracles or signs and wonders, which I am glad. It simply says “he was pleasing to God”. There were no “laws”, the Ten Commandments hadn’t been given, so how did Enoch know how to please God?
The answer can be found in Genesis 1:26-27. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (emphasis mine)
How did God create man? He took the dust of the earth, formed it into the shape of a person, then breathed His breath into the nostrils and the being became living! (Genesis 2:7) That leaves me speechless and in awe of God. God’s breath actually created the entire DNA, skeletal structure, veins, arteries, organs, blood and oxygen in one’s system, and it functioned perfectly! And this was after He had created the universe and everything in it, and though everything He created was “good”, He said when He created man that it was “very good”. (Genesis 1:31)
If we didn’t have any other written scripture, other than the creation, we wouldn’t need anything else to begin to fall in love with Elohim, our Creator! We could create a detailed praise list with very little effort. If we actually would sit with God and allow Him to bring us into the place to watch His creating of the universe, we would truly begin to understand some of the love that makes God who He is. God created everything that was needed for man to live BEFORE He created man. That alone reminds me of the Psalm which says that God prepared a table before us. (Psalm 23:5) There weren’t visible enemies there but there soon would be. Just remember, just because you don’t see your opposition, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. To continue in that verse, we can now see God anointing Adam’s head with oil and giving him dominion (rule) over all the earth; his cup definitely was overflowing!
So Enoch heard (passed down through the generations) of God’s creation, saw it all around him, believed that God created the universe and all that was within it, including man, and he drew close and became an intimate friend of God. I believe that was his witness, people met God through Enoch’s character and goodness. He chose God over the things of the world.
There is one other extraordinary witness in this passage. God is giving us a picture of the rapture! It was by faith that Enoch believed God...it is by grace you have been saved through faith; not of ourselves, but as a gift of God, Ephesians 2:8. It was that faith that changed him to believe and receive the transformation into God’s image, and that was very pleasing to God! Because he was pleasing to God, he was “taken up” into the heavenlies! It also states that he did not face death. One day he was on earth and the next day he was taken up into heaven, I love it! Jesus told His disciples that when that day comes two will be in the field and one will be taken. Oh what a glorious day that will be!
“...and He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”
Do you seek after the Lord? Do you hunger for Him? Do you seek to please Him? I’m not talking about works. Have you ever noticed that in John’s revelation of the end that Jesus repeatedly spoke, “to those who overcome”. I believe He was talking about overcoming the spirit of dullness that is in the world, and unfortunately, there will be many who have been deceived into believing they are saved because of the corruption of the Word in our churches today. There is no evidence in their lives of faith in Jesus Christ. They may have repeated the words someone told them to say to be saved, but they didn’t believe in the testimony. Salvation is received by faith, through grace, with a repentant heart recognizing one’s sin and a need for a Lord to lead us to the living water and be made new! That is a life long journey and one filled with challenges and trials. But as we “overcome” the spirit of defeat in the world by trusting in Christ, we are being transformed daily. As we read His Word, and receive it in our hearts, and allow Him to lead us in our daily life, we learn to be “overcomers”. The life of Christ is evident in us and flows out of us. You don’t need a ministry platform. Actually, those who touch others on a daily basis in their everyday occupations have an opportunity to impact more lives than someone who is the head of a “ministry”. Why? They become so busy running the ministry, they don’t have time to get to know those who they are to be “ministering to”. Whereas, those who we touch on a daily basis, meet Jesus in us and see His love in action. We have the greatest ministry field there is!
I encourage you to go to the section Praise His Holy Name and begin using the A-Z Praise List daily and watch your love for the Lord explode! Feel free to copy and print them to distribute. I can’t tell you how many I’ve given away as I meet someone who is struggling, or in need of encouragement. Maybe that is you today. It’s never too late to become like Enoch and pleasing in God’s sight.
Dear Elohim, words cannot express the love in our hearts for You. We desire to please You and to become more like You in every aspect of our lives. We open our hearts to You and ask You to show us where we have taken You out of our lives. We boldly ask, as Moses did, to know You as You know us! We hunger and thirst for Your righteousness. You are holy and pure and worthy to be praised! We see more clearly this day that the living water that flowed through Emmanuel’s veins washed us clean. We are new creations through Your Son, Jesus Christ. It is only through Jesus that anything we accomplish is “good” and will stand in the day of judgment. Thank You for loving us, teaching us and discipling us when we go astray. Your love sustains us, nourishes and comforts us in our time of need. We acknowledge that every moment is our time of need. Be magnified and glorified in our lives today. We love You more than words can ever say. Amen.
